In this talk we will provide an introduction to the theory of spectral synthesis leading up to the characterization of spectral synthesis sets, also called S-sets. We then investigate projective multiresolution analysis, a generalization of multiresolution analysis, and its use in wavelet theory for Banach spaces. This has an application to the question of spectral synthesis that has been pioneered by Georg Zimmermann.
